About Hot Puthu & Mothagam - Indian Dessert Street Food

Hot Puthu is a steamed rice cake that is filled with palm sugar and then topped off with more sugar plus some shredded coconut. It's also spelled Puttu or pittu or even Puttu. This is a common dish in both Sri Lanka as well as South India, and can be a breakfast item. The vendor here is always here at night in Little India and she makes the hot puthu from scratch, you can see here in action if you stop by! She steams the little tin cups filled with ground rice and then pops them out when they are cooked. It costs 4 ringgit for 3 portions of puthu. She also sells mothagam which another sweet dessert which is made from rice flour, palm sugar, cardamon, and coconut. You can think of mothagam as little coconut dumplings. These cost 3 pieces for 5 ringgit. These are both accidentally vegan. No milk or eggs in these at all.
